Biography

Yasmine Cantaut-Belarif obtained her PhD from the Institute of Biology of the Ecole Normale Supérieure and University Pierre et Marie Curie in 2015. Under the supervision of A. Triller and A. Bessis, she showed the contribution of microglia, the immune cells of the nervous system, on the nanoscale dynamics of post-synaptic components in the mouse spinal cord. In 2016, she joined the team of C. Wyart for her postdoc and investigated in zebrafish the role of cerebrospinal fluid during development. She showed that a polymer conserved in the cavities of the brain and spinal cord of vertebrates described more than a century ago, named the Reissner fiber, controls the straightening of developing embryos. As a CNRS Research Associate at the Paris Brain Institute since 2020, her research focuses now on identifying the long-range signaling events and molecular pathways originating from the cerebrospinal fluid that influence morphogenesis at embryonic and post-embryonic stages.

Research work

Our work aims to unravel the mechanisms by which the cerebrospinal fluid communicates with peripheral organs to ensure a correct alignment of the posterior axis of the body from the embryonic to the post-embryonic stages. Using zebrafish as an animal model, we combine the power of genetics and in vivo imaging to :

  • identify the long-range signalling pathways originating from the brain and spinal cord cavities that influence morphogenesis,
  • understand how these signals are integrated to ensure a correct body shape.
